Are there scams involved where people steal email addresses?

Some guy claiming to be from India has been trying to get my mother's email address and someone from "London" has been trying to get my husbands. Can they use the address in a way that would be detrimental?

Are there scams involved where people steal email addresses?
Yes, there are such scams. They want to be able to comb through your emails, looking for personal, confidential information that could be used for identity theft. This in turn can lead them to gain access to bank accounts or apply for credit cards in your name, in effect posing as you. That's why you should treat your email address the same way you would treat your phone number--meaning you shouldn't give it out to just anyone.

In fact, in the world of email, the #1 rule is NEVER open emails from people you don't know and trust. NEVER.
Reply:It is a scam!
